Using social media for podcast growth feat. Jeffrey Dwoskin

From: Podcast Marketing Magic Newsletter with Shreya Sharma and Devin

What do you think the role of social media should be for podcasters?

I think social media is a vital piece of the toolkit for podcasters. The philosophy I have with it is the same philosophy that someone taught me when I was doing sales.
You keep telling everybody about it.
You've created something you believe in; that you're passionate about. And what you have to believe is – people are always listening, but they're not ready to hearyou yet. I don't mean it literally, I just mean hear your message.
Everybody kind of is ready when they're ready. And that's the thing that's hardest to get around no matter what you're doing. You want everyone to be ready for your message when you're giving it to them but that's not always the case. So what that means to me is, and especially when it comes to social media, you have to just keep going.
You have to keep acting like everyone is listening, like they are paying attention, like they care. Talk to them like they're always responding.

What kind of content on social media tends to resonate most with potential podcast listeners? Are there specific formats or themes that consistently perform well?

I think there's no one right way. It's always what is the right combination of all things that can help you. You need to put out engaging content; it needs to grab people's attention, anything that gets them interested.
Depending on the context, you have to push either your guest or the topic itself that you’re talking about. Sometimes, no one may know who your guest is. And I say that with the utmost respect.
One of the cool social media things that's undervalued is Instagram Live. I think because we are and have personalities. Consider having your guest on an IG Live to push your latest episode. It is the closest we can get to what we actually do, which is hit the mic and broadcast. That's but one way to engage.

What nature of content works for independent podcasters or those who are just starting out?

I think one key way that helps and that supports them, and I know you guys are big on this and I'm a big fan of it too, is going on other podcasts. Go on other podcasts, their social media, and talk about what you're good at talking about. You’ll hopefully pick up some listeners along the way.

Based on your observations and data, what future trends do you predict in the relationship between social media and podcasting?

Well, to say AI is generic but I think we're on the cusp of AI. Beyond just creating show notes, we’re moving on to using AI to do deep analysis. When you create, you go on social media and you post and you post. What then? You're creating a lot of data.
This is where you can start to use AI to understand the data. Even something like when is the best time to post? You can look into your own data, which is one of the cool things about Stampede Social. We're just starting to tap into some of the stuff you can do.
For instance, there's a button you can push to analyze all the responses to a social media post. You can dive into who your fans are, or what the people in the comments are saying about how you can get to those other topics that people might be interested in, based on comments.
It's all there right now, and there are ways to do it. But with AI, it will become super easy. Then it's not just a matter of creating content, but also understanding that you're creating data that can then be analyzed. This data can then help you decide things like when to do that creative or what types of creative to do. We're just scratching the surface.
